A mother and her teenage daughter’s road trip through the Scottish Highlands takes a deadly turn when they encounter a swarm of mutant midges.
Midgies is co-created by Fort William-based author Barry Hutchison (of the JD Kirk series). He is bringing his latest idea to the big screen with Midgies, a darkly comedic horror about a swarm of mutant, flesh-eating midges terrorising the Scottish Highlands. What began as a light-hearted social media post has evolved into a fully-fledged film project.
Originally conceived as a joke, the concept quickly gained momentum, attracting attention from filmmakers and media outlets. “It felt like the idea took on a life of its own,” says Hutchison, who teamed up with Glasgow-based director Alessio Avezzano, known for his work with major brands like Irn Bru and Porsche, as well as his BBC sitcom Isleanders.
This 3-minute trailer was shot over two days in and around Glasgow and Loch Lomond and produced on a micro-budget, with the help of a talented crew and local studios, including Motif (Mad Max Fury Road) and Blazing Griffin (Anna and the Apocalypse), who’ve come on board to support the project. The film blends Scotland’s quick-witted humour with classic monster horror tropes for a universally entertaining experience. Check out the trailer below.
The film is gearing up for full production next year with Glasgow based director Alessio Avezzano and the team actively seeking investment to bring the full version of the film to life.
“We were blown away by the talent and dedication from everyone involved,” Hutchison says. “Now, we’re pushing to begin full production as early as next summer.”
Just from watching the trailer, the film looks like it will be an epic comedy horror.
